Aside from all the different designs and styles that a woman can select from when picking the perfect purse for a specific occasion, there are practical issues to consider. A purse is no longer just a simple bag; there are a range of different purses to choose from, each with their own advantages and disadvantages when it comes to fulfilling their practical purposes.

The major difference between types of purses is between purses that are designed for a night on the town, and purses that are designed for everyday use. These different types of purses are usually made with different materials and are constructed in a different manner.

Everyday purses can be divided into those purses that are meant to be held by their handle, and those that are meant to be slung over the woman’s shoulder. Everyday purses are made from a variety of materials, such as leather, nylon, plastic or straw.

Evening purses are usually smaller than purses designed for everyday use. A clutch purse, for instance, is meant to carry little more than your cell phone and a tube of lipstick. A clutch purse does not have a strap or a handle, and is designed to be either carried in the woman’s hand or tucked under her arm. Evening handbags are similar to everyday handbags discussed above, but they are, once again, generally smaller (after all, your evening purse should complement rather than distract from your evening attire). More importantly, evening purses will generally be made of more luxurious materials than an everyday purse would be made from. For instance, evening handbags are often made from silk or velvet.

The traditional must-have purse is the iconographic Louis Vuitton purse, a finely constructed handbag decorated with the LV monogram. Other popular designer handbags come from Hermés, Chloe, Prada, Gucci and Balenciaga. Aside from the traditional designer houses, a number of up and coming designers are quickly making a name for themselves, including Miu Miu, Coach, and Marc Jacobs.
